Every statistical number and percentage value in news reports used to receive my complete trust without any hesitation. To me, the numbers were perfectly pure without any flaws. The entire group approved our decision without sparking any discussion. The public trusted percentage-based findings as absolute outcomes because numbers seemed to generate definite solutions that nobody could disprove.

However, that belief underwent a radical shift due to a small event. I recall an article that claimed the acceptance rate had risen by two times. A subsequent news report demonstrated that the acceptance rate remained lower than ten percent. The connection between these two statements initially escaped my understanding. The two stories shared by the group presented completely different impressions. Later, I discovered that they were describing the same situation. The percentage rate had increased from four to eight percent. The numbers and their corresponding changes produced contrasting emotions.

I did not analyze it at that moment. I merely noticed it and then moved forward. The information remained in my thoughts for longer than I expected. The data revealed the identical outcome throughout its presentation. The presentation method was the only thing that changed.

Following that time, I started recognizing the same pattern in other places. I came to understand that significant graphical trends emerged from distinct starting points on the graph. The updates to the charts created significant visual changes that simultaneously erased important data points. The numerical facts remained correct, while the explanations behind them kept changing over time.

My study of statistics enabled me to describe what I was observing in words. Numbers present factual information, yet they need human interpretation because they cannot communicate their meaning independently. A person must always select which elements to compare, as well as which parts to highlight and which components to exclude. The way someone decides to start an analysis determines the ultimate result before anyone investigates further.

I don’t want to tell people that numbers are untrustworthy. I still use numbers in my work. Now, I take my time when it comes to using numbers. At the present moment, statistical data stops my work because I need to understand the basis of comparison. I become curious about the information that is not displayed in the data. My work process changed because I needed to understand numbers before they could function as solutions during my work activities.
